Malta Table Football National Team reaches Semi Finals in World Cup held in Rochefort

This weekend the Maltese National team participated in the World Cup organised annually by the Federation of International Sports Table Football. The event was held in Rochefort in Belgium.

The Malta team played in Group 2 where they won against Gibraltar (4-0) and Netherlands (3-0) and lost against Italy (who eventually won the tournament (1-3) and advanced to the Quarter Finals.

In the Quarter Finals they met Portugal and emerged as winners by the score of 2-1 to progress to the Semi-Finals where they lost 1-2 against the No.1 ranked in the World in Table Football, Spain

The Malta team was composed of Mark Gauci (Captain) Charles Aquilina, Massimo Cremona, Joseph Mifsud, Angelo Borg and President Joe Zammit Pavia.

On Saturday the open individual events were played with Mark Gauci placing 2nd in the group after a shootout with Massimiliano Nastasi. In the Last 32 he eliminated Italian Massimo Bolognino winning 1-0 but then lost in the Last 16 with Luca Colangelo 1-2.

The other player in the Open event Angelo Borg won the group with 7 points whilst in the Last 2 he won against the Austrian Alexander Haas 3-1. Borg got eliminated in the last 16 by the Belgian Valery Dejardin on shots after the game finished 0-0 after extra time.

In the Veterans category Charles Aquilina won his Group with 7 points. Then in the last 32 he eliminated English player Justin Finch (2-1) but was eliminated in the Last 16 stage by the Italian Francesco Mattiangeli losing 1-0.Massimo Cremona also won his Group with 7 points but then got eliminated in the last 32 stage by the Belgian Daniel Scheen losing also 1-0. The other player in this category Joseph Mifsud was eliminated in the Group stage.
