“Today we look at the social model of disability that emphasizes differences rather than impairment. The emphasis is on the person and his abilities and not his lack of them.” This was stressed by Fr Martin Micallef, Director of Id-Dar tal-Providenza, during the presentation ceremony of a trophy to the winner and certificates to all participants in the competition for the design of a new logo for the Home.
He added that today we emphasise that the quality of life of persons with disability can only improve if society changes its attitude and not if the individual changes himself. That is why today we accept the fact that we have no right to dominate with our decisions the life of a person with disability. The person with disability has every right to state what he/she wants and thinks is best for him/her and these wishes should be respected. Fr Martin said he believes that the new logo reflects all this and he wanted to congratulate Mr Sean Cini who managed to come up with a fresh design. This new logo will replace the previous one because it was a logo that reflected the mentality of how society looked at persons with disability 50years ago.
Mr Cini was presented with a Trophy for his winning logo design for Id-Dar tal-Providenza. The forty-eight participants in the competition were given a Certificate of Participation by the Archbishop Mgr Paul Cremona OP in an activity that was held at the Home in Siggiewi. In September 2013, Id-Dar tal-Providenza issued a call for a design of a new logo that reflects its Vision, Mission and Values in conjunction with next year’s festivities of the 50th Anniversary of the founding of Id-Dar tal-Providenza by Mgr Mikiel Azzopardi on September 12th 1965.
In a short message Archbishop Cremona said that the Church and Id-Dar tal-Providenza took it upon themselves to make persons with disability come out in the open from the cellars that most of them were kept in. Today we focus more on their abilities rather than on their disabilities.
26-year old Sean Cini is an emerging artist with a fresh and bright talent in Visual Arts and Graphic Design. Sean specializes in semi-abstract and expressionistic art. His creations which are developed on a variety of media, portray various emotions and expressions particularly of different movements of the human body. Presently, Sean is a Graphic Designer in MaltaPost’s Marketing Department.
