Malta Independent Tuesday, 16 September 2014, 15:12 Last update: about 11 years ago

The Attorney General today filed an appeal against the granting of bail to Gregorio Scicluna, 52, who stands accused of murdering his father-in-law.

Mr Scicluna, known as ‘il-Goodie,’ faces a total of 11 charges, with the most serious being the murder of 61-year-old Joseph Caruana. He is also accused of the attempted murder of his former partner of nine years – the victim’s 27-year-old daughter Simone – and of their two eldest daughters, aged three and five, as well as of causing serious injuries to Ms Caruana and to the three-year old child.

He was granted bail at the beginning of September against a personal guarantee of €30,000 and a deposit of €30,000.

In the appeal, the Attorney General said that Scicluna is an unpredictable man and his bail conditions do not offer peace of mind to his other victims, who are lucky to have survived the shooting.

His young daughters witnessed the murder. After shooting his father in law dead, he then proceeded to smash his head in with the butt of the gun.

The Attorney General said that Scicluna had been found guilty of helping a woman kill her husband 20 years ago.

He has also been convicted for sexual offences, some of which involved minors.
