Lifecycle challenge: Cyclists to reach Tokyo today

Malta Independent Friday, 19 September 2014, 09:52 Last update: about 11 years ago

Cyclists who have taken up this year’s lifecycle challenge in a bid to raise funds for the renal unit are on their way to Tokyo. The challenge of this year’s participants was to cycle for 10 days, from Fukuoka to Tokyo.

The cyclist who initially had to drop out due to problems he encountered with his bike has borrowed the bike belonging to another cyclist, who dropped out due to an injury in his knee. The cyclists are to cross the finish line some time today. By the end of it, the cyclists would have travelled a total distance of 2,000km.

“After facing a gruelling route, the cyclists moved into the countryside and although this meant that cyclists had to endure two days of steep hills totaling a distance of 15km, the cyclists did not have to contend with traffic and traffic lights.

“In spite of the gradient - imagine 15km of San Blas - all of the cyclists managed to complete the route,” a spokesperson for the challenge said.
