FOR.U.M suggests underground transport system

Malta Independent Monday, 22 September 2014, 12:34 Last update: about 11 years ago

FOR.U.M has suggested an underground transport system that, it says, will ease the traffic problems in Malta.

In its pre-budget proposals, which are mainly divided into two categories, FOR.U.M updates its previous proposals which have still not been implemented in the previous budget (and which FOR.U.M still feels are still very relevant to the current economical scenario) as well as gives new ideas and innovative proposals which will benefit society and the economy at large.   One of these new proposals being recommended by FOR.U.M is that to promote a healthy lifestyle, including measures to reduce the financial costs on the health budget in the long term. It is being proposed that all membership to gyms and other health clinics are to be tax free.

Such membership should not be included in the amount taxable so as to encourage more people to be more active in their daily living. Since tax reduction benefits already exits such as on vehicles which are eco-friendly and such benefits should be extended to any membership which promotes health lifestyle.

FOR.U.M is also proposing that all motor bikes are to be free of any road tax as to encourage more people to buy and use motor bikes. The increase in traffic congestion and the huge problems in parking are two issues which the Government needs to address urgently. Also, instead of spending huge amounts of money to subsidise the local transport, an efficient underground system should be seriously considered. An underground system would definitely reduce traffic congestions, reduce air contamination and would solve the parking issue.

The Forum Unions Maltin hopes that its proposals will be considered and implemented by the Government.
