MHRA condemns unauthorised hunters’ protests

Malta Independent Monday, 22 September 2014, 12:17 Last update: about 11 years ago

The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA) condemns what yesterday seems to have been an unauthorised protest in Valletta and assaults on members of the media in Buskett by a number of hunters.

Whilst it respects that everyone has the right to make their voice heard, no one expects that this is done in the shameful manner we all witnessed yesterday.

MHRA President Matthew Pace states that “Government needs to be tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime irrespective of which issues are being addressed, and called for swift and effective action against the perpetrators”.

MHRA asserts that Malta has gained a reputation amongst foreigners of being a safe place to be in and accordingly has also positively contributed to the success of tourist arrivals recorded over the past years.  Matthew Pace stated that, “this status cannot be taken for granted and needs to be safeguarded by all.”  MHRA has consistently argued that anything which impacts negatively tourism is ultimately a threat to the whole economy and well-being of all.  MHRA expects that the authorities take prompt legal action against those who were responsible for yesterday’s actions as these are harmful to Malta’s well- earned reputation of a friendly and hospitable nation!
