Phantom police

Sunday, 19 October 2014, 08:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

It's about time we changed the name of the Traffic Police to another one more adaptable and more suitable in the circumstances.

Driving on the streets of Malta has gone from bad to worse in recent years: long traffic jams, double-parking all over the place and an absolute disregard for the rules of law and order are all factors that are contributing considerably to this state of affairs. Traffic policemen have become redundant, simply non-existent, and public transport is still in chaos after so many years. Discipline, especially on the roads, is non-existent, with public transport vehicles scattered everywhere and all this is happening when the Maltese citizen was promised a clean and healthy environment on the buses and some polite drivers to drive them.

Unfortunately, politicians are still fast asleep after their long, long summer holiday. A year-and-a-half since the last general election, Malta Taghna Lkoll - which promised everything to everybody - has only managed to engage jobless people with the civil service! Mind you, not so many: something over 2,000 people in such a short space of 18 months without any calls for applications! In this respect, Joseph Muscat and Co. deserve our admiration. But when it comes to the daily traffic chaos around most important places in Malta, politicians simply don't give a damn!
