Marlene Farrugia explains why she still votes with the government in spite of her criticism

Tuesday, 21 October 2014, 09:42 Last update: about 11 years ago

Labour MP Marlene Farrugia said that her duty is to urge the government to deliver its promises, not to distance herself from it.

Writing on Facebook to explain to "those who are asking why I voted with my government in spite of my vociferous (constructive) criticism", Dr Farrugia saud that she "will keep supporting it with my vote until its no longer possible to do so.

"The country needs solutions not resignations.
"We politicians come and go but the outcome of our decisions will map out the country's present ,and future for years to come.

Earlier, Dr Farrugia expressed doubts that the energy plan which she says clinched the electoral victory for the Labour Party will materialise in time.

Writing on Facebook at the end of the parliamentary sitting in which the House discussed an Opposition motion demanding more details on the delay in the completion of the power station at Delimara. Labour had pledged to finish it by March 2015 but the government has now admitted that the deadline will not be reached, but stopped short of giving a new date.

In Parliament, Dr Farrugia made a list of questions on the project, some of which had been penned in an article that was published in The Malta Independent on Monday. At one point she stopped the sitting on a point of order informing the House that Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi had not answered her questions.

On Facebook, Dr Farrugia wrote: "From tonight's Parliamentary debate which became necessary when we learned that the new Power Station completion timeframe had been changed, I can conclude the following:
"No timeframe currently exists for the completion of the new gas fired power -station. All stakeholders still have to come together to establish a timeframe for the masterplan.
"Therefore:
"We do not know how long this government is going to take to deliver on its promise of cleaner air. I wonder if its still going to hesitate to at least switch BWSC plant to diesel, since no switching to gas date is in sight.
"All other issues related to timeframes like the source of financing of energy tariff reductions,
wisdom of having LNG tanker in Mxlokk instead of FSU or pipeline project, will need re thinking according to new timeframe implications.
"Government has no finalised contracts to present.
"Even these are works in progress.
"For the sake of our country and countrymen, I hope that the energy plan that clinched our PL victory, materialises in time and in a way that Malta's dignity is safeguarded."
