Kalkara elderly man's murder: Attorney General appeals bail granted to accused

The Attorney General has filed an appeal against a decree granting bail to Gregorio Scicluna, 52, of Kalkara, who is accused of murder and attempted murder.

Scicluna stands accused of murdering Joseph Caruana, the father of his former partner. He is also accused of the attempted murder of his former partner's three children. The killing had taken place inside the home of the victim situated in Kalkara.

He was granted bail on Monday against a deposit of €30,000 and a personal guarantee of €30,000.

The Attorney General contested the ruling, arguing that the accused did not satisfy the conditions at law to be granted bail.

Last week, a court heard how the accused first shot at the victim and then finished him off by hitting him repeatedly with a shotgun.

The victim suffered a brain haemorrhage due to a severe brain injury. The Attorney General complained that Mr Scicluna was a relapser and had already been found guilty of assisting a woman in her attempt to kill her husband in the past. Therefore, the AG argued that he could not be trusted.

He therefore called on the Criminal Court to revoke bail and order Mr Scicluna's re-arrest.
