The Energy Ministry, in response to statements by PN MP Tonio Fenech in an interview with The Malta Independent, said that no change in the workings of eco-reduction in the water and electricity bills have occurred between March 2013 and today.
"This reduction remained working in the same way as it had done under the previous administration, before March 2013," the Ministry said.
In an interview that appeared on Wednesday's paper, the PN MP argued that "Instead of issuing electricity bills every six months, the government changed it to a bi-monthly system". He added that "without introducing safeguards that would ensure the benefits received by law regarding the eco-reduction discount".
Mr Fenech had given an example, stating that the eco-reduction should be worked on an annual basis. If, during January and February, a person exceeds their required amount to receive the reduction, however remain well under the required amount the rest of the year, the person would lose out on two-months' worth of returns, he had said. "By law, eco-reduction is worked on a yearly basis and the person in question, should not have lost the eco-reduction for those two months".
