Opposition should apologise for failing to control high inflation - government

Friday, 24 October 2014, 08:30 Last update: about 10 years ago

Instead of boasting about how prices had shot up between 2008 and 2013, the Opposition should have apologised for adding on to the people's financial burdens by not controlling inflation, the government said in a statement this morning.

The latest Eurobarometer survey showed that the number of people worried about the cost of living had dropped from 63% to 26%.

During this year the 0.3% inflation rate registered was the lowest in 30 years, whereas the average during the previous administration was 2.6%.

The figures show that as Finance Minister Tonio Fenech allowed inflation to grow in an exaggerated way and much more than what was happening in nearby countries. Mr Fenech was also the first minister who wanted to impose income tax on the minimum wage, the government said.

This government is not insensitive. After reducing the price of water and electricity and bringing about price stability in fuel, the government said it will continue to take care of the people.
