COLA increase: 'The Prime Minister has again lied to the people', Nationalist Party says

Friday, 24 October 2014, 12:36 Last update: about 11 years ago

The Prime Minister has again been caught in a lie relating to poverty, pensions, social services and the living wage, the opposition has accused.

Between 2008 and 2013, the median wage in Malta increased by €2,640, regardless of the economic troubles in the world, the PN said. "In the same five years, pensions received an increase of around €4 per week. Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, before being elected, would argue that he would remove poverty by introducing a living wage, a wage much higher than the minimum wage. He also promised to substantially increase pensions and social services".

"Now, Joseph Muscat is proposing a COLA of €0.58 when it was first said to be €1.16. This, while Ministers and their deputies receive high wages. The Minister's wife who said that a shopping trip to the supermarket costs €25 is receiving €13,000 a month. Labour MP Silvio Schembri's family have eight posts," the PN said.
