Scotts Supermarket applying 2% quota of employees with a disability; companies urged to follow suit

Saturday, 22 November 2014, 13:57 Last update: about 10 years ago

Scotts Supermarket is one of the local companies applying the 2% quota of employees with a disability. The company employs 249 people across its outlets, 5 of which are persons with a disability.

During last Monday's budget, it was announced that companies which fail to meet the legally mandated quota will have to pay €2,300 for every person with disability they should have employed. The money will go towards a fund used for campaigns to encourage more persons with a disability to enter the workforce, as well as training for them, entitled the National Fund for Integration of People with a Disability. In addition, employers who employ persons with a disability will be provided with a tax credit annually. The 2% quota had been introduced over 50 years ago, however the majority of companies failed to implement it.

This morning, Parliamentary Secretary Justyne Caruana visited one of Scotts outlets in Sliema, and highlighted the importance of such a measure.  She noted that the budget also induced the exemption of capital gains tax and stamp duty on transfer of residence to foundation for these people. Persons with a disability who enter the workforce will still be eligible for a special benefits pension.

In comments earlier this week, General Director of the Malta Employer's Association said that more discussion is required regarding implementing the 2% quota. He noted that the association supports the integration of different enabled employees, however there are questions that need to be answered, particularly in cases where a company employs a limited number of people.
