PARIS - France suspended the planned delivery of a warship to Russia on Tuesday, after months of growing speculation about what would be the biggest arms sale ever by a NATO country to the Kremlin. STRASBOURG, France - Pope Francis demanded Tuesday that Europe craft a unified and fair immigration policy, saying the thousands of refugees coming ashore need acceptance and assistance, not self-interested policies that risk lives and fuel social conflict.

IRAN NUCLEAR TALKS-ANALYSIS

VIENNA - The United States and Iran hope a new deadline in nuclear talks will allow them to finally reach a deal. But Tehran's apparent reluctance to compromise may soon leave U.S. negotiators running out of ideas on how to reduce Iran's capacity to make nuclear arms. Negotiators have spoken of progress, despite failing to meet their goal of an agreement by Monday's deadline in Vienna. But Western diplomats familiar with the talks said Tuesday they have agreed on little more than to keep talking until June 21, after failing to substantially narrow differences.

BRITAIN-SOLDIER-KILLED

LONDON - British lawmakers said Tuesday that two al-Qaida-inspired extremists who murdered a British soldier in a London street had been under scrutiny by the intelligence services, and one had expressed his intention of killing a soldier in an online exchange months before the attack. Parliament's Intelligence and Security Committee said that if British spies had known of Michael Adebowale's declaration, "there is a significant possibility" they could have prevented the May 2013 murder. 

GREECE-MIGRANT SHIP

ATHENS, Greece - A freighter crammed with hundreds of migrants trying to enter Europe illegally was drifting in high winds off the Mediterranean Sea island of Crete Tuesday, and Greek authorities launched a rescue mission with five ships. A coast guard statement said the 77-meter-long (250-foot) Baris cargo ship suffered engine failure some 30 nautical miles southeast of Crete.

PORTUGAL-FORMER PREMIER DETAINED

LISBON, Portugal - After he left office three years ago, former Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates' home address was a smart apartment in Paris' classy 16th arrondissement. On Tuesday, he spent his first day in prison after a Lisbon judge ordered him detained while the ex-leader fights accusations of corruption, money-laundering and tax fraud.
