MEP Roberta Metsola: 'EU must stick to plans to end phone roaming charges'

Thursday, 27 November 2014, 13:09 Last update: about 10 years ago

Member for the European Parliament Roberta Metsola today called on the EU not to renege on plans to end mobile phone roaming charges in Europe by the end of 2015.

In a statement after MEPs voted to approve the resolution on the Digital Single Market, Dr Roberta Metsola said "ever since I was elected in 2013, I have consistently called for mobile phone roaming charges in Europe to end.

There is absolutely no justification for consumers to face huge bills just because they used their phone while traveling in the EU. The end of roaming must become one of the cornerstones of a true European Digital Single Market. As a Member of the European Parliament's Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee, I will continue to push this forward in favour of citizens across Europe."

The resolution as approved today calls on the Council to open negotiations with the European Parliament on the Connected Continent package, which will lead to the end of mobile phone roaming charges. Earlier this year, MEPs also approved a report calling for mobile phone roaming charges in the EU to be removed completely.
