A man from Marsaxlokk today was remanded in custody after he pleaded not guilty to the theft of a chequebook and cashing the cheques.
Giuseppe Cassar,55, who lives in a garage, allegedly defrauded a woman by cashing 8 stolen cheques amounting to €2,490. The accused said he lived on social benefits and denied using the aforementioned chequebook, forging a signature and cashing the cheques
The case was being heard in front of Magistrate Miriam Hayman, and he was also charged with committing a crime while under a probation order and breaching bail conditions relating to a separate case last July. He had been granted bail in July against a deposit of €2,500 and a €10,000 personal guarantee.
This time round, Mr Cassar did not request bail.
Lawyers Michael and Lucio Sciriha appeared for the defence and Police Inspectors Rennie Stivala and Robert Said Sarreo prosecuted.
