Diabetes a very personal problem

Sunday, 14 December 2014, 08:00 Last update: about 10 years ago

Lately, we have read and heard many opinions on diabetes, including research reports.

The biggest problem is that little knowledge is available to the general public.

It is a big problem that can start at birth; nowadays newborns in hospitals are thoroughly checked out but this is not so for home births.

I think that GPs, midwifes, nurses, and carers should have a sound knowledge of the problem and are able to quickly diagnose diabetes, including signs of serious damage.

One must know one's own body regarding any intolerance to certain food and beverages and allergies. One example is flour, which is found in goodies such as pastizzi, cakes, biscuits, and so on. Likewise, yeast is found in many recipes including beer. Flour and yeast are a no-no for diabetes.

Be aware of any bruises, cuts, inflammation, swollen feet or ankles, and any eye problems. Take action immediately.

It is important to have blood tests, the most important one being HbA1c, as well as visits to a podologist, cardiologist, neurologist, and ophthalmologist. Oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist are a must; learn how to chew the food, as good digestion will produce healthier results in blood tests.

Do not take at face value any 'suitable for diabetics' or 'diet' or 'sugar free' labels; first of all products may contain flour and/or yeast, and secondly one must not eat the whole box or packet; only a small amount should be consumed. Also read the ingredients to ensure they are safe for you.

Maybe the health authorities will invest in better quality pills and insulin; there is a generic drug and a better generic drug; there is insulin and better insulin. The least one would expect is that the authorities would subsidise the better quality products which at the end of the day will save money by providing a healthier life. All medicine and tablets should be sealed and dated. Large containers are unsafe and give raise to abuse.
