A Nigerian man was today charged with conspiring to traffick cannabis as well as importing and being in possession of the drug.

The court heard how Eshiemokhai Yakubu Okhiulu, 30, who lives in Sicily, was arrested by members of the police drug squad upon arriving in Malta aboard a catamaran on Monday. He was found to be in possession of 640 grams of cannabis. According to media reports, the man hid the drugs in a suitcase filled with foot items. 

The accused pleaded not guilty and no request for bail was made. Lawyer Patrick Valentino appeared for the accused. Inspector Nikolai Sant prosecuted.
