Palermo authorities have launched an investigation into the possible landing of ISIS terrorists among migrants who landed in Sicily in the past months.
Italian media report that Italian Secret Services have reason to believe that Libyan and Syrian terrorists could have been among migrants who crossed over to Italy on boats leaving from North Africa.
In the past months, Italian Home Affairs Minister Angelino Alfano had spoken of possible infiltrations by terrorists on Italian soil, mentioning Sicily as the landing point for potential terrorists.
More than 197,000 migrants landed in Sicily in 2014, and the huge number makes the possibility of terrorists arriving in Italy more likely, the media reports.
The anti-terrorism squad in Palermo is responsible for the investigation, with Italian media saying that some terrorists could have already left Italy to enter other European countries, while others are still there.
