An incident revolving around a man's girlfriend being called ugly and annoying, resulted in ferocious fight in September, 2010.
The whole incident began with 44-year-old Anthony McKay, the accused, turning to his friend's girlfriend, a couple who he is not fond of, calling her ugly and telling her she was annoying him. At which point she exited the building along with another of his friends, Brian.
Later in the evening, his friend called him up and challenged him to a fight calling him 'gay'. He passed by the Agatha Barbara monument while being driven by his sister, and saw Brian, parked. In the car, the girl he insulted and her boyfriend, Alan, were with Brian. Mr McKay told the court that Brian grabbed a hammer and began hitting him with it, saying that he was hit three times. Mr Mckay alleged that Alan punched him while wearing a knuckle duster, while Alan's girlfriend went to hit his sister. His arm was fractured.
"When I pulled myself off the ground in pain, I went around his (Brian's) Pajero and hit the bonnet, then proceeded to leave. My keys and mobile fell on the ground and Brian gave me the keys the next day". He said that while in hospital, he called Alan, Brian and Alan's girlfriend.
Mr McKay was originally charged with causing slight injuries, disturbing the peace, committing a crime while under a suspended sentence. These charges were dropped once the Parte Civile withdrew the criminal complaints
Mr McKay admitted to causing damage to the bonnet of the car which would cost 200 euros.
Magistrate Miriam Hayman gave Mr McKay a six month prison sentence suspended for one year.
