Saturday, 27 December 2014, 17:45 Last update: about 10 years ago

Today marked the 37th anniversary of Karin Grech’s death, with Prime Minister Joseph Muscat as well as Environment Minister Leo Brincat attending her memorial service.

Her father Edwin Grech, thanked those for attending the ceremony. "When trying to provide a service, I received a present, a letter meant for me, however turned out to be a bomb killing my daughter," he said. "I hope the day will come when the person responsible will be caught".

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said that those were darker times. "We need to look at that tragic incident and ensure that we never end up there again". Dr Muscat also mentioned Raymond Caruana, another victim from that time, calling both these victims metaphorical siblings, who were victims of crimes committed by intolerant people. He described the two victims as the children of Malta, "a country that has learnt from the times it has passed through".

A priest then said a few words and wreaths and flowers were placed at the bed of the monument in San Gwann.

Karin Grech was the victim of a letter bomb in 1977, as she opened a gift-wrapped parcel meant for her father. Professor Edwin Grech had just returned back to Malta to work at St Luke's Hospital during the doctors' strike.
