The Prime Minister this evening raised the worsening situation in Libya with EU Commission President Jean Claude Juncker in a meeting held behind closed doors.
A government spokesperson said the prime minister told Mr Juncker Libya is fast degenerating into a failed state and Mr Juncker was told that the EU must not ignore what is happening in the south.
The government continued in its call for more burden-sharing when it comes to immigration.
The prospect of an energy union was also raised during the meeting, with the government saying there is need for more interconnectivity with North Africa.
The government stood fast in its line that while Greece should be allowed a certain amount of flexibility in its debt repayment terms, Maltese taxpayers should in no way be affected.
Discussions were held on the future of economic monetary union. The government said it is in favour of better rules but does not agree with tax harmonisation.
The Maltese delegation told Mr Juncker that Malta is hitting its deficit targets and is on track for coming out of the excessive deficit procedure.
