There was some sort of an explosion at Mitiga airport in the early hours of this morning leading to the destruction of at least one old Ilyushin cargo plane, one Libyan Airlines and two other planes, sources have now confirmed to Libya Herald, reporting from Malta.

The fire was extingushed and flights were not affected.

Unconfirmed reports say that the actual explosion may have occurred at a fuel tanker which in turn caused the disused cargo plan to catch fire. Another version is that the cargo plane caught fire resulting from an electric fault during maintenance.

Whilst another version of events is that the explosion was caused by either a detonated bomb or an RPG being fired at the fuel tank.

There are no reports of deaths or injuries. Mitiga airport continued operating normally today, the Libyan Airlines source told this paper.

Very early reports of the explosion being caused by an attack by a jet fighter seem to be unfounded. There are other unconfirmed versions of events implying the cargo plane was carrying "cargo" and was deliberately destroyed.

There have been no reports of persons or group claiming responsibility for the incident.
