President of Malta visits Maltese community in the Midlands

Sunday, 22 February 2015, 08:11 Last update: about 10 years ago

Early last month, the Maltese community in the Midlands came together in an event hosted by Her Excellency Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Malta, who was on a visit to the UK. The first of its kind to be organises by a Maltese official, it was intended to bring together the many Maltese people scattered all the Midlands. This marvellous occasion was held at The Belmont Hotel in Leicester. What originally started as a small informal gathering, turned out to be a huge success with more than double the numbers expected, varying from students studying overseas to young and older professionals, as well as pensioners and wives of British soldiers and servicemen that were stationed in Malta over 40 years ago.

On arrival, guests were greeted and introduced to Her Excellency, and were given the chance to speak with her and to mingle with other Maltese people before we were directed to the main venue. Her Excellency appeared moved by the welcome she was given and this was reflected in her speech, when she highlighted the importance of unity and the get-together. She was amazed by the amount of Maltese living in the Midlands and hoped that this event will be followed by other future gatherings.  At the end of her speech, the President was presented with a glass gift, specially engraved for the occasion, presented to her by the youngest member at the gathering. The Maltese National Anthem was played and wholeheartedly sung by all those present.

The Maltese community in the Midlands were honoured and humbled by the presence of the President, who in return became very emotional due to the warm welcome extended by all those present.
