A memorable concert on the coldest day of winter

Monday, 23 February 2015, 10:59 Last update: about 10 years ago

A concert attended by the largest audience ever and it was a pity that St Paul's Church in Rabat could not accommodate more people though seating was increased. The photo above shows the world-famous Fra Alessandro Brustenghi during the rendition of one of his musical pieces at the Annual 9 February concert held annually by Fondazzjoni Paulus at the Proto-Parish and Collegiate Church of St Paul in Rabat, Malta. This year the concert was a special concert to commemorate the 450th anniversary from the Great Siege of Malta of 1565, the 25th Anniversary of Pope John Paul II visit to the Rabat Sanctuary-Grotto of St Paul and the first anniversary of Fondazzjoni Paulus which incorporates the Chorus Paulus and Orchestra Paulus, established in the Pauline Year and which gave the first concert in 2011.

The concert commenced with two polyphonic pieces directed by Chorus Paulus choirmaster Paul Portelli, one of the pieces composed at the time of the Great Siege of Malta. Mr Portelli composed two contemporary pieces for this special concert. Afterwards, the concert continued with the participation of Fra Alessandro Brustenghi. However, although the audience came in full force to listen Fra Alessandro, the climax of the repertoire was reached by the performance of Missa Brevis in onore Papa Giovanni Paulus II. The orchestra and the two choirs, the Chorus Paulus and the Gozitan Choir Gaulitanus, were directed by Colin Attard. The concert came to a close by the Antifona Sancte Paule Apostole by Vincenzo Ciappara.
