22% of staff members within different departments at the Medicines Authority are furthering their studies both with the University of Malta and other universities and institutions, Social Dialogue and Consumer Affairs Minister Helena Dalli said today.

Dr Dalli and Parliamentary Secretary for Health Chris Fearne were speaking this morning during the Annual Pharmacy Symposium

Minister Dalli spoke about the synergy that exists between consumer affairs and the role of the Medicines Authority in areas relating to quality, safe and effective use of medicines.  She explained how currently 22% of staff members within different departments at the Medicines Authority are furthering their studies both with the University of Malta and other universities and institutions. In addition, traineeship programmes are being offered to postgraduate students of the University of Malta who follow level 8 studies such as the Doctorate of Pharmacy degree.

Dr Dalli remarked how this initiative is beneficial to both students as well as to the Medicines Authority because it is investing in professionals who are gaining knowledge, expertise and will, who in the future will be an asset to the industry and to improve the process that ensures quality and accessibility of medicines to consumers in Malta.

Dr Dalli stressed how the Government considers the needs of the consumer with regards to accessibility to medicines as a priority so much so that it will be establishing a Medicines Intelligence Unit within the Medicines Authority as announced in the last budget speech.

Parliamentary Secretary Chris Fearne focused on how both the clinical and community streams of pharmacy have come a long way. The Government's endeavors to improve the Pharmacy of Your Choice scheme create greater scope for pharmacists working in the community, he said.

Likewise, the Department of Health's ongoing commitment to enhance clinical and care pathways gives added worth to the role of clinical pharmacists. Clinical pharmacists are a primary source of scientifically valid information and advice regarding the safe, appropriate, and cost-effective use of medications in a healthcare setup.
