There were 10 cases of accidental firearm discharge by the police during 2013 and 2014, Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela told Parliament this evening.
Replying to a question by PN MP Beppe Fenech Adami, Mr Abela said there were four cases of accidental firearm discharge in 2013 and six cases last year.
In six of the cases in question, the police officers involved temporarily lost their authorisation to carry a firearm until they underwent a retraining process.
In another case, a police officer was given a warning while in the remaining three cases no action was taken.
Six of the cases happened in the Rapid Intervention Unit’s quarters, and one of the cases was at the police station at Malta International Airport.
