Helwa tat-Tork factory to move from Zebbug to Tal-Handaq

A Zebbug factory sited in a residential area which produces Helwa tat-Tork (to the surprise of at least one Mepa board member who thought Helwa tat-Tork comes from Turkey) bigilla, dips and other Maltese delicacies under the brand name Camel Brand is to relocate to a factory in Tal-Handaq as a result of a unanimous vote by the Mepa board on Thursday.

The new site is a derelict factory in the largely industrial Tal-Handaq area which will be demolished and rebuilt.

There is obviously a planning gain in that this decision frees the Zebbug residential area from an industrial plant in its midst.

The only concern expressed by the board when considering this application was whether there are other factories in the vicinity that can negatively impact on the food processing plant but the owner reassured the board that further up there are similar plants by Paprukei and Maypole and there are no factories next to the proposed site.

The owner will enter into a binding agreement with Mepa to close down the Zebbug plant within six months from starting to operate from the new site.
