Friday, 20 March 2015, 16:08 Last update: about 10 years ago

'Romanus', a festival focusing on Malta during the Roman Empire is being organized at Fort Rinella through the collaboration between Bank of Valletta and Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna (FWA).

The Arena at Fort Rinella in Kalkara will be transformed into a Roman Encampment during the weekend of the 22nd March 2015 where members of Legio X Fretensis, the FondazzjoniWirtArtna and numerous volunteers will live the soldier's life in Malta during the Roman occupation.

Joyce Tabone, Manager, Media and Community Relations at Bank of Valletta met with Mario Farrugia, Chairman and CEO of FondazzjoniWirtArtna during one of the military training drills for the festival.

'The army of ancient Rome was a formidable fighting force - well disciplined, organized and supplied with an array of effective and battle-proven weapons,' said Mario Farrugia. 'The spectacular military successes of the Roman legions throughout Europe lay in disciplined battlefield application and relentless training in use of these weapons.'

'Malta is strewn with Roman sites, be it the Roman Villa in Rabat, the enormous Roman cistern close to Birzebbuga, the St Agatha's and St Paul's Catacombs - all testimony to this important period in our history,' continued MrFarrugia. 'Romanus will also feature talks and lectures on the Roman way of life mainly focusing on the military aspect.'

'As a main supporter of Malta's rich heritage and the long term Main Partner of Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna, Bank of Valletta is proud to collaborate on this event that sheds light on a very important era of Malta's history' said Ms Tabone. 'Bank of Valletta seeks to be active within the community in which it operates in preserving our past as well as supporting events that create more awareness about our past.'

Further information about 'Romanus' can be obtained from the FondazzjoniWirtArtna's website at www.wirtartna.org of from the Fondazzjoni's Facebook group.

Bus no.3 from Valletta stops just outside Fort Rinella and free parking is available on site.
