An intriguing new novel

A friend of mine gave me a short novel entitled Love and Myths which has just been distributed in local bookshops. I was intrigued by the title and by the well-designed red cover depicting a beautiful woman and her mature male admirers.

The story features a film producer, his friend and admirer “The Azzurro”, and a film director, the three of whom are planning a controversial movie about the last days of Jesus. Their project is sabotaged by the forces of “reaction”, headed by Dio Denaro and by “The Celibate”.

The short chapters consist of a series of “takes” for the shooting of Love and Myths. The story line in ancient Jerusalem shifts to present day Malta, involving the seduction of The Azzurro’s Italian girlfriend by Mr Denaro as well as by The Celibate. The rivalry in lust between these two men leads to murder.

The themes dealt with are various, including moral, cultural, and religious issues, all within the framework of an unusual, fast-paced story. The book highlights the abuses of intolerance and hypocrisy, and the love and search for truth.

I’m impressed with the author’s cultural background, his writing skills, and his grasp of philosophical thought. His novel is an entertaining and thought-provoking read.
