Why I will vote ‘Yes’

Sunday, 22 March 2015, 08:13 Last update: about 10 years ago

I am not a hunter, but I will definitely be voting yes. Besides, there was a lot of hypocrisy and misleading arguments made by the anti-hunting brigade. I will just mention the following argument:

“Why shouldn’t Maltese families take their children to enjoy the countryside in spring?”

Normally, children attend school in spring and their parents go to work on weekdays. So families usually go to the countryside on weekends, mostly in the afternoons when hunting is prohibited. In my previous letter on this subject, I have already pointed out the hypocrisy of those who make so much fuss about a few mornings of hunting in spring, while not objecting to five whole months of hunting in autumn and winter, when the countryside is also beautiful and enjoyable, and when hunting is allowed. Don’t such families ever take their children to the countryside then?

Besides, why should I deny so many thousands of fellow Maltese and Gozitan hunters of what is perhaps their only pastime just because I am not a hunter, or hate hunting? After all, even the European Court of Justice has agreed to give Maltese and Gozitan hunters the chance to hunt for a very limited period, and an extremely limited catch, in spring, because, contrary to what SHout are saying, such limited hunting in spring in Malta will not affect the population of quail and turtle dove.
