Anton Refalo passed on ‘free construction works’ allegations to Whistleblower’s Office

Gozo Minister Anton Refalo passed on information about the “free construction works” allegations to the Whistleblower’s Office, Labour CEO Gino Cauchi said today.

It is alleged that the former Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono's husband billed the ministry for works carried out for constituents.

Mr Cauchi said the allegations were passed on to the necessary civil structures, and these structures have moved the case forward thanks to the Whistleblower’s Act enacted by this government.

He said all allegations need to be properly investigated and all the necessary procedures have to be adhered to.

Once it has been established that the allegations are founded, the will then be passed on to the police.

Mr Cauchi said additional details published by the media have led to a police investigation, expediting the process.

Mr Cauchi called it an "unprecedented case" in politics, where the highest echelons in the PN have been caught trying to hide one of the biggest political scandals ever.

He noted that Opposition leader Simon Busuttil had not referred e-mails to the police where the aggrieved contractor sought help in obtaining payments owed to him.

He questioned why Dr Busuttil and PN secretary general Chris Said chose to hide the truth.

Mr Gauchi said they knew about the case for years and even met the whistleblower, yet they took no action.
