SHout Campaign representatives have claimed that the 'Yes campaign', in favour of keeping Spring Hunting, have lied to the Maltese and Gozitan people.
The conference was being held in Hamrun, where members of the 'No' campaign urged people to vote against spring hunting in the coming referendum.
The SHout representative, Saviour Balzan, argued that those in favour of keeping spring hunting have said that hunters are equal to all other Europeans. "They are wrong as nowhere else in Europe can a derogation for Spring Hunting be found".
Mr Balzan argued that hunters have claimed the referendum to be a threat for minorities. "This is not true. Why hasn't this argument applied to other referendums?"
The pro spring hunting campaign has argued that there are thousands of derogations in Europe, the SHout representative said. "There is no derogation that speaks about spring hunting, most of them relate to things that have nothing to do with spring hunting, such as tackling birds in an airport that could cause danger to planes".
Another point argued by the 'No' to spring hunting campaigners was that the idea that the derogation was negotiated "is wrong. Nowhere did the agreement speak of spring hunting".
The SHout campaigners denied that the referendum is being paid for through hunting licenses. "Hunting licenses for spring hunting are free... and at the end of the day no price can be put on democracy".
"20 years ago, in 1993/94, the government of the time published a legal notice that restricted spring hunting. This resulted in protests in the street, attacks on temples, and damage".
The campaigners reiterated that political parties are not in favour of spring hunting, as both Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and Opposition Leader Simon Busuttil gave everyone the liberty to choose for themselves. "It is not true, as the Yes campaign has said, that the political parties are in favour of keeping spring hunting".
Lastly, they addressed the statement that "hunters are tolerant"."The past bred the future. People don't change through words but through facts".
