Minster for Foreign Affairs George W. Vella today held a meeting with the Secretary of State of Portugal Bruno Macaes who is presently on a visit to Malta. Minister Vella greeted Mr Macaes by recalling the very strong historical ties between the two countries dating back centuries, and underlined the excellent relations that link the two countries as European Union member states, which have at the same time retained a very active profile on Mediterranean issues.
The discussions addressed the situation in the region, primarily in Libya with both Malta and Portugal extending their full support to the UN-led process that should culminate in a National Unity Government. Minister Vella spoke about how the crisis in Libya continues to bear significant consequences on Malta from the security, commercial and migration fronts. Secretary of State Macaes underlined the importance that Portugal attaches to a durable solution for the ongoing crises in view of the effects this could have on the region.
Discussions also focused on the review of European Union instruments such as the European Neighbourhood Policy, to make these more responsive and proactive to developments in the EU's Southern Neighbourhood. The two countries will be expanding on their positions on this issue at a Ministerial Meeting in Barcelona to be held on 13th April, which is envisaged to discuss means of improving and deepening relations between the EU and its Southern partners.
Minister Vella extended his appreciation to the position taken by Portuguese Government on the issue of migration and for the tangible support afforded to Malta in terms of relocation to Portugal.
