Reform at MCAST should be about students, not new appointments – Nationalist Party

Wednesday, 1 April 2015, 10:43 Last update: about 10 years ago

The Nationalist Party said it is in favour of a reform that is being envisaged for the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology, but any changes should keep in mind the well-being of the students and not serve to give appointments to certain people.

Several questions remain unanswered on what is happening at MCAST, Opposition spokesperson for Education Therese Comodini Cachia said.

From details that have emerged so far, it is clear that the reform is not aimed to review the vocational education aspect, but for some people to be given a top appointment with a good salary, the PN said.

No consultation process took place on the reform, which is not the way matters should be conducted when the college affects the lives of 10,000 students every year.

The Opposition is also questioning whether the people given the new appointments will be selected by lecturers, as is the case at the University, or whether they will be chosen by others at the top.
