Speaker Anglu Farrugia has taken part in a meeting for Speakers from all EU Member States which was held in Rome.

In his speech, Dr Farrugia referred to the recent tragedies of boat people and warned that we must not allow a situation where there would be two categories of human rights - one for Europeans and one for non-Europeans. 

Parliaments in Europe must put in place a monitoring system so that the abuses by traffickers of people be checked.

Unless there is concrete action by the EU, Speaker Farrugia concluded, we must all be ashamed to say we are Europeans
