Literary enthusiasts flocked to St James Cavallier for the launch of the Maltese translation of Suad Amiry’s ‘Sharon and my mother-in law’ who came to Malta for the occasion.  

The book has been translated into Maltese by Jean Paul Borg who also attended the evening. Amiry  is touring  capitals in different continents talking about her book.

Addressing a packed hall, Palestian author Amiry recounted her experiences during a 42-day curfew in West bank Ramallah in 2002. “With this curfew, I ended up with two occupations. I dont know, to tell you the truth, which occupation was more difficult, whether it was that of (Ariel) Sharon or that of my mother-in law.”   She told the audience. 

The book contains a diary Amiry kept during the Israeli invasion when her 92-year old mother-in law was caught inside  her house during a 42 day curfew  The book is surprisingly funny and different from other writings on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Suad talks about the struggle to live a normal life in an insane situation, from the impossibility of acquiring gas masks during the first Gulf War to her dog acquiring a Jerusalem passport when thousands of Palestinians couldn’t..
