WasterServ today inaugurated a new Civic Amenity Site at Ta’ Qali, bringing the total number of similar bulky waste disposal sites in Malta and Gozo to six.

The new Civic Amenity Site boasts of an in-vessel composter for the on-site enclosed treatment of green waste. A high percentage of good quality compost is expected to be recovered from a total of 650 tonnes per annum of green waste which is generated at the vegetable market Pitkalija and deposited at Ta’ Qali. It is expected to receive a total of 4,760 tonnes per annum of bulky waste

The other sites are situated at Mriehel, Hal Far, Luqa, Maghtab and Tal-Kus, Xewkija Gozo. Civic Amenity Sites are facilities where the public can bring and discard various types of bulky household waste, domestic hazardous waste as well as recyclable materials.

Addressing the inauguration, Environment Minister Leo Brincat said that the new Civic Amenity site at Ta’ Qali, co-financed by the EU, forms part of a whole chain of projects financed through similar funds.  He pointed out one should not look at how much Government spends on similar projects, but how much it saves in the health sector when environmental well-being is addressed in a proactive manner.

“The most important aspect about the CA sites is the fact that these have containers for all type of waste in the waste stream. Through this project we will be using more than ever before what are called waste compactors – a sophisticated technology which can be transported and helps to reduce the volume of the waste. In this way we can save expenses related to transport as well as greenhouse emissions,” Minister Brincat added.

In the coming months WasteServ will also be investing in and procuring additional equipment to improve the services being offered at existing civic amenity sites.
