European Union to require cars to have automatic emergency call systems

The European Parliament has approved a system that would see auto-mobiles automatically send out a call to emergency services when road accidents occur.

The eCall system will automatically call the 112 number and transmit data on the vehicle and its location. It will help facilitate the work of fire-fighters, save lives, reduce traffic jams and save money. All new cars launched would need to have the system as standard by 31 March 2018.

Lead negotiator for the ALDE Group Ulla Tørnæs said: "The eCall system is a great tool to save more lives on our roads and reduce the seriousness of injuries.  In my opinion, we've reached a good balance between a high level of data protection and increased safety to the benefit of European citizens.
