Politics is not handing out favours or retaining one’s seat – Lawrence Gonzi

Monday, 4 May 2015, 06:39 Last update: about 10 years ago

Former Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has said that politics should not be about handing out favours or retaining one’s seat in Parliament.

Writing on Facebook on the eve of the opening of the new parliament building at the entrance of Valletta, a project that Dr Gonzi initiated when he was head of government, Dr Gonzi said this was “a particular day for me, having served the country for 25 years in Parliament.”

His post was accompanied by a photo of Dr Gonzi and his wife Kate with world-renowned architect Renzo Piano, who designed the new Parliament building. The photo is being reproduced above.

“I wish the new building will be a step forward for Parliament and Maltese politics.  I hope those who serve in politics continue to deserve the people’s confidence.

“Politics is not just administration. It is not the handing out of favours on an effort to retain one’s seat.

“Politics should aspire to create a more just and inclusive society where everyone can reach one’s goal. The greatest contribution to genuine politics comes from politicians who are honest, dedicated and competent.”
