The first Malta jousting festival and Renaissance Fair are to be held at Fort Rinella this weekend.

Supported by Bank of Valletta, the festival – organised by Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna - will depict a 17th century Europe scene where two men on horseback and in full combat gear will ‘fight’ each other using ‘lances’.

Visitors to the festival can get to test their weapon skills.

Mario Farrugia, chairman and CEO of the foundation, explained that work behind the scenes has been going on for months.

“After thorough research into the typical life of the knight in Europe and in Malta, FWA commissioned armour for the participants who will be facing one another during the tournament,” he said.

He explained that jousting is no easy feat, demanding skill and stamina, as well as a good rapport with the horse. The armour is an exact replica of the one used to be worn by knights at the time. It is very cumbersome to wear especially on horseback during combat.

Members of the media were given the opportunity to view the spectacle a day before the tournament will take place. Charles Borg, chief executive officer, BoV was also present for the event.
