Historian Godfrey Wettinger has died, aged 85.

Born in Mosta in 1929, Wettinger received his education at the Lyceum and St Michael’s College.

He graduated in history as an external student at the London University in 1953, got his MA in 1955 and PH.D in 1971.

He started lecturing at the University of Malta in 1972 and later became head of the history department and dean of the faculty of arts.

He often spent spells abroad, including in Palermo and Oxford, for research purposes.

A former president of the Malta Historical Society, Wettinger was nominated member of the National Order of Merit in 1996.
