Former Cospicua Mayor suggests government should boycott Church over Zonqor university stand

Saturday, 23 May 2015, 16:05 Last update: about 10 years ago

The former Labour Mayor of Cospicua, Joseph Scerri, today urged the government to boycott the Church over Archbishop Charles Scicluna's stand on the controversial Zonqor university project and then acted surprised that he ended up in the news.

Mgr. Charles Scicluna has called on the government to refrain from developing the American University of Malta on pristine land in Marsascala. Yesterday he took part in Xarabank.

Mr Scerri, who served as Mayor of Cospicua from 2003 to 2013, suggested in a Facebook post that the government should not invite Mgr Scicuna to any official activities.

“True labourites should not give any contributions to the Church because our money is being used against us and our children. I also feel that the government should ignore the Archbishop and not invite him to any activity.”

Labour MP Luciano Busuttil stepped into the fray, declaring that he did not agree with Mr Scerri’s comments.

The former Mayor later sounded all surprised when his post was picked up by Illum. He said, in a second post, that he did not mind being reported but asked if the newspaper had reported anything about the €35 million that the government is going to have to dish out to fix the disgusting failures (hnizrijiet) on the weak concrete at Mater Dei. “Or was my post more important,” he asked.
