Wednesday, 27 May 2015, 23:25 Last update: about 10 years ago

Another school in Malta has joined the growing water-conservation movement instituted by HSBC Water Programme - Catch the Drop, following the inauguration of a micro water treatment system at St Margaret College Kalkara Primary.

Thanks to a grant by the HSBC Water Programme - Catch the Drop, the school is now able to use an existing collection area for rainwater and a natural embankment in its garden to harness rainwater and use it for cleaning, and irrigation purposes. Using a series of urns, the micro water treatment system has extremely low running costs, operating predominantly by gravity.

The project opening was led by Minister for Education and Employment Hon. Evarist Bartolo and HSBC Bank Malta CEO Mark Watkinson in the company of officials from Kalkara Primary and the Ministry for Energy and Health.

HSBC Water Programme - Catch the Drop is the largest ever campaign of its kind in Malta and aims to forge a blueprint for progress on sustainability of water as a resource. The Kalkara project was one of 21 school projects that won funding from the campaign for scholastic year 2013-14.
