Updated (2): Academics condemn ‘lack of transparency’ in American University project

Jacob Borg Wednesday, 27 May 2015, 11:23 Last update: about 10 years ago

A number of academics at the University of Malta and various sixth forms have issued a joint statement condemning the lack of transparency behind the American University project at Żonqor Point.

Just fewer than 60 academics had expressed their support for the joint statement as of yesterday. Since the publication of the story on The Malta Independent, the number increased to 150.

The statement, which was first published in The Malta Independent today, reads:

On the proposal to build the “American University of Malta” in the vicinity of Żonqor Point in Marsaskala, we express our concern on the lack of transparency in the process and careful assessment in the selection of the project itself as well as of the proposed site. We urge the Government to exercise due prudence with a view to enhance the common good including through the strengthening of quality education and through the protection of land which lies outside development boundaries.

Many fear that the American University will put pressure on the University of Malta, which relies on government funding, to start operating more like a commercial entity.

Undergraduate courses at the UoM are free for Maltese and EU citizens, who are also paid a stipend by the government.

The bulk of opposition to the project- funded by a Jordanian investor – has been against it being built at Żonqor Point rather than the project itself.

The University will be made up of five colleges and "all the amenities expected in a modern-day university, a lawyer representing the developers has told The Malta Independent on Sunday.

Degrees given by the American University of Malta (AUM) will be recognised by any country that recognises the Bologna accredited degrees. "In simple terms, the degrees issued by the AUM will be recognised in each and every member state of the EU."

Courses will be offered at Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate levels.
