FIFA president Blatter skips third appearance, stays out of public view

Associated Press Thursday, 28 May 2015, 11:29 Last update: about 10 years ago

FIFA President Sepp Blatter skipped another speaking engagement early Thursday as he avoids appearing in public for a second day.

Blatter missed giving a scheduled speech to open a session of FIFA's medical conference in a Zurich hotel.

FIFA chief medical officer Jiri Dvorak told delegates that Blatter has to "manage the situation," after the governing body was rocked Wednesday by an American federal racketeering case.

Two FIFA vice presidents were among seven men arrested Wednesday in a Zurich hotel.

FIFA headquarters in Zurich was also raided by Swiss federal agencies for a separate probe of the 2018-2022 World Cup bidding contests.

Blatter has since stayed out of public view by avoiding three scheduled speech-making duties within 24 hours.

He skipped two meetings of continental soccer organizations from Africa and South America on Wednesday. He typically would attend those ahead of Friday's annual congress of FIFA's 209 member federations.

Late Wednesday, FIFA issued a statement on behalf of Blatter where the president insisted he was determined to root out misconduct.

The FIFA president would also usually follow protocol and attend the UEFA meeting scheduled for 12:30 p.m. (1030 GMT) Thursday.

However, UEFA leaders want to postpone Friday's FIFA presidential election for at least six months amid the current turmoil.

UEFA is supporting Blatter's election opponent, FIFA vice president Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan.

Blatter is scheduled to appear later Thursday.

He should address member federations — the FIFA election voters — at the ceremonial opening ceremony of congress at 5 p.m. (1500 GMT).
