A 29-year-old Briton was granted bail today after pleading not guilty to the trafficking of cannabis, after 1kg of cannabis grass was found in his Burmarrad apartment.
The police were keeping Simon Douglas Roberts under observation, and the drugs were found on 30 April after a warrant to search his home was obtained.
Mr Roberts was accused of trafficking cannabis, as well as the simple and aggravated possession of the drug.
He pleaded not guilty, and the defence requested bail.
Prosecuting inspector Malcolm Bondin said that he did not object to this request, noting that Mr Roberts – who has been living and working in Malta for the past five years – had already been granted police bail and had proven to be trustworthy.
After the defence argued in favour of a low bail deposit, Insp. Bondin told Magistrate Audrey Demicoli that he felt that a €500 deposit would be sufficient in this case.
Consequently, the magistrate granted Mr Roberts bail against a €500 deposit and a €2,500 personal guarantee.
Lawyers Giannella and Gianluca Caruana Curran appeared for Mr Roberts.
