Artists join opposition to development of University at Zonqor and in other ODZ sites

Artists have joined the chorus of opposition to the development of a university at Zonqor Point.

In a statement, the artists said that most of them thrive on our surroundings for inspiration. "Our work is a direct reaction to all that we see around us and what we produce, whatever the form, is a personal expression and reinterpretation of our surroundings. This is what makes art alive.

"We also believe that as artists who expose our work in public, we are also duty bound to express our thoughts and opinions especially those regarding our society and the very surroundings that inspire us.

"This is why we have united to convey our message and plea, that Government’s plans to develop an infrastructural project on the site at Żonqor in Marsascala will be a gross mistake.

"Żonqor point is a pristine open area whose beauty lies in the very fact that this area is untouched and raw. It commands unobstructed views of the sea like few other places can offer. It is one of the very few areas where anyone can go and enjoy the peaceful environment.

"Secondly, Marsascala as a locality does not need this project which will set a precedent for further buildings and developments which will only benefit a few speculators. Marsascala is one of the remaining smaller seaside towns. A project of the magnitude being considered by Government would take away this feature which still makes Marsascala unique.

"Beyond all the environment talk, beyond the fact that we also have serious doubts whether this project will really be of an ‘educational’ nature, we also express our disapproval at the way that areas designated to be ODZs can so easily be earmarked for development.

"Malta is very small, open spaces are becoming more limited and the very few sites that we can still claim as open spaces are also being threatened.

"We hereby oppose Government’s plans for this project at Żonqor and stand united that all ODZ areas are to be protected."
