The Executive Committee of the Students’ Philosophical Society (SPS) at the University of Malta has, after discussion, decided to express its disapproval at the way in which the Government’s proposal for the construction of an American University of Malta is being conducted.

On a statement, the SPS Executive Committee said it is wholly opposed to the plans to construct the University at Zonqor Point, which is scheduled as Outside Development Zone (ODZ). SPS is convinced that Zonqor Point's classification as ODZ should be respected, and this conviction informs the Committee's firm belief that it should remain untouched, as should all land that is not scheduled for development.

Furthermore, it does not find itself convinced of the benefit that this University, whether constructed at Zonqor Point or elsewhere, is supposed to bring the Maltese Islands.

As a result of the above, SPS has decided to support the efforts of the Front Ħelsien ODZ. A further clarification of the detail of our position, once this has been established after a consultation with our membership, shall be forthcoming.
