A man allegedly attacked by police officers when they pulled him over for drunk driving did not smell of alcohol and looked sober, Mostra district police sergeant David Cina told a court today.
Testifiying in the compilation of evidence against Jean Paul Aquilina, who stands accused of dangerous driving, assaulting two police officers and disobeying police orders, PS Cina said he turned up on the scene at around 1:30am and found a number of RIU officers and civilians on site.
Mr Aquilina is claiming he was beaten up by two of the RIU officers – Mark Tonna and David Camilleri, who are set to be charged with slightly injuring him.
When he asked Mr Aquilina what happened, he started crying and claimed the officers beat him up for nothing.
One side of his face was red and he had a mark under his eye, PS Cina said.
A woman who was in the car with Mr Aquilina said the younger of the two officers, PC Camilleri, was the one who beat him up.
PS Cina said Mr Aquilina's family, who turned up after the incident, were evidently in shock but at no point were they aggressive.
The case continues.
